LOOKING FOR ART
IN TIMES SQUARE
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 11, 2012 - TIMES SQUARE, NYC, NY
While Molly was taking in the heights of theatrical arts, I was wandering around one of my least favorite parts of the city, in search of anything in the visual art realms that wasn't overtly tourist driven.

ILLUSTRATION PORTFOLIO
COJO ART VERSION 2.0
MONDAY JANUARY 9, 2012 - NY, NY
Although I'm doing a shit-ton of painting and blogging right now I'm still gonna make time in 2012 to continue drawing for magazines, newspapers, and the occasional ad agency, or clothing line (right now I'm working on a piece for Guitar World Magazine).
My illustration portfolio CojoArt.com has been recently revamped and now is fully functional on the ipad, iphone, laptop, or desktop. You can touch (or click on) the large image and it will cycle through to the next image, or you can touch (or click on) any of the thumbnails on the right and start cycling from there.
If you haven't seen my commercial work, check it out and let me know what you think. It was hard editing it down because I had a lot of pieces to choose from, having been professionally cartooning and illustrating as a full time freelancer for the past 14 years!
Oh, and I also revamped my Client List and have done the math. I'm proud to say that I have worked with over a dozen fortune 500 companies, and I've also had clients starting with every single letter of the alphabet (except for Q).
Thanks to Thomas Dougherty of GamersAndMusic.com for the programming help.

SHOOTING A WHITE RHINO
AT JOSEPH MONTGOMERY'S VELVETEEN
SUNDAY JANUARY 8, 2012 - LAUREL GITLEN, 261 BROOME ST., L.E.S., NY
IIt was after I made a lap around Laurel Gitlen gallery snapping a few shots of the pieces in Joseph Montgomery's new show Velveteen, when I noticed legendary art critics Jerry Saltz and his wife Roberta Smith come in from the cold and walk right into frame.
After years of attending art openings, fairs, and galas I had never actually seen them in the flesh. Much like a white rhino, or the elusive Yeti, I was wondering if I would ever catch a glimpse of them in a gallery setting. Yet, here they were, right in front of me at a Bud can reception, on the lower east side, ON A SUNDAY NIGHT!

DAVID HOCHBAUM AT MUNCH GALLERY
SUNDAY JANUARY 8, 2012 - 245 BROOME ST., L.E.S., NY
The "photo constructor" David Hochbaum's new show at Broome Street's Munch Gallery combines photos, handwritten typography, neon, etchings, boats, paint, massive Polaroids, and miniature sculptures.
Most fascinating to me were the large scale Polaroids. Decades ago Polaroid produced 5 prototype large format cameras for the World's Fair. The cameras, unlike their portable counterparts, were giant and had to be moved on wheels. They also shot original Polaroids that were 20" x 24". Hochbaum got his hands on one.

POP GOES THE BIBLE
MARK DeMAIO CARTOONS CREATIONISM
DECEMBER 23, 2011 - 136 WEST 13TH STREET, WEST VILLAGE, NYC, NY
I unfortunatly couldn't make it to the opening of artist Mark DeMaio's satirical and controversial take on religious iconography titled Pop Goes The Bible at Synchronicity Fine Arts, but to my good fortune I got to meet up with the artist himself a few days later for a private tour of the work.
It's not often I get to drink wine with an artist in an empty gallery. Being that we both are painting in line art styles we talked a lot about technique and the learning curve that comes with painting slick lines on canvas.

BORED TO DEATH
A TRIBUTE TO HBO'S LATEST CASUALTY
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2011 - NY, NY
Bored to Death was one of my favorite shows on TV. Earlier this week HBO dropped the axe on it, as well as another good NYC based show How To Make it In Amercia. Today we pay tribute to a great show about a writer, a patronly father figure, and his freelance artist friend by highlighting five articles about Bored To Death I've written over the past three years. The writer, the actors, the inspiration, and the art are all covered in photos, art and words.

WHAT DID ONE SNOWMAN
SAY TO THE OTHER SNOWMAN?
WINTER HOLIDAY CAPTIONIZER: NEW YORK, NY
Back in 2006 on the TV show Lost, there was a Christmas riddle that only the person who was supposed to take over the Hatch would know:
"WHAT DID ONE SNOWMAN SAY TO THE OTHER SNOWMAN?"
The answer to the riddle, as revealed on the show, is seen above in cartoon form.
I didn't follow LOST and was posed the riddle by a friend who did. I came up with a bunch of other possible solutions and when I was told the actual answer I liked mine better. Let's see if you are funnier than me and TV's Lost!

HOW NOT TO
MAKE IT IN AMERICA
THURSDAY DECEMBER 22, 2011 - NY, NY
Looks like Crisp jeans won't be coming back into style in 2012. This pisses me off. Here we have two cool HBO shows I can identify with, How To Make It In America, and Bored To Death getting canceled on the same day. How often do you find really well written TV shows about young people, artists, writers, designers, trying to make a living in New York City. These aren't sitcoms, they are filmed on location in places I actually go to, work, and live.
They have problems, rivalries, and deal with real issues.
How To Make It In America also had one of the best tv opening songs ever, when you combine it with slow-mo video, quick cuts, great photos, and a solid white stacked Helvetica type treatment.

BUSHWICK HOLIDAY PARTIES
ALL NIGHT ART CRAWLING IN BROOKLYN
FRIDAY DECEMBER 16, 2011 - BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN, NY
I was going to be out of town but a fortunate change of plans kept me from leaving, so I was able to crawl around Bushwick to the various spiked cider art affairs that were happening on this nippy pre-Christmas Friday evening. The night, like many of my art crawls took some interesting turns.

DACIA GALLERY
ANNUAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION & OPENING RECEPTION
THURSDAY DECEMBER 15, 2011 - LOWER EAST SIDE, NYC, NY
I got there late, the wine was already gone, but I managed to take some pictures of a bunch of the art in their new exhibit HYPERBOREANS. I like Dacia gallery a lot because they work with emerging artists as well as established artists, and they are right next door to Lambert Fine Arts, so you can check out two shows for the price of one if you are art crawling in the neighborhood. Afterwards I went to the cast party of Shiemiel whereI wolfed down undercooked chicken skewers and goat cheese quiche with F. Murray Abraham, yes, Salieri himself!

FREESTYLE ART OPENING
A SHOWING AT JOE BALLWEG'S STUDIO
DECEMBER 10, 2011 - RIDGEWOOD, QUEENS, NY
The artist studio two doors down from my own studio was having an opening with fourteen artists displaying their work. Joe Ballweg has only opened up his studio as a pop-up gallery once before in the past year and I was out of town, so considering mapquest told me I'm literally 1 second away I had no reason not to schlep over and see what was going on.

A fter the beer in the keg ran out at the Mighty Tanaka Opening of Robots Will Kill & Friends, artist Gigi Chen was leaving to go to a show in the Lower East Side and invited us to come. BRANDON FRIEND'S
IDENTITY CRISIS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
DECEMBER 9, 2011 - LOWER EAST SIDE, NEW YORK, NY
While enjoying some very intense beverages prepaired by professional mixologists I was introduced to Brandon Friend at the closing party for identy CRISIS at Lambert Fine Arts. His work, and the abundance of collaborative work he and Griffin created for the show was impressive. The giant crowd that turned up for the closing party made it hard to really take it all in.
A few days later I caught up with Brandon Friend and got to talk with him about the show, his artwork, and the beauty of collaboration.

PHILLY FIRST FRIDAY
ART CRAWLING OLD CITY
DECEMBER 2, 2011 - 2ND AVE, PHILADELPHIA, PA
While all of the art world (including all of the art writers and art bloggers with a budget) were down in Miami this week kicking off the opening of Art Basel, I was catching a bus bound for Philadelphia for their beer and wine fueled First Friday art crawl. I've attended at least a dozen Philly first Friday events, but this would be my first in over a year.
