THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES MRS. ROBINSON 6-8-05
I just had a weird memory of a time when I was young. I must have been 12 or younger when it happened, and have since blocked it out.
Well, I recovered it today when I heard that Anne Bancroft (the woman who played Mrs. Robinson in THE’ÄàGRADUATE) had died.
As I recall, it was around dusk and my mom was in the middle of cooking dinner. She had just turned on the sink to wash a few dishes as I entered the kitchen. I was up in my room minutes earlier listening to the radio and had heard this weird song, the refrain of the song was spoken "Would you like me to seduce you?"
Looking back on it now, I think it was a George Michael song or something, but the line was a sound grab of Anne Bancroft's famous line from the movie The Graduate. I had no idea what the hell it meant, or what the reference was to. So like any kid, you hear something you think sounds cool, you repeat it.
I walked up to my mom and asked flatly:
"Would you like me to seduce you?"
She was like "What?"
"I said, 'would you like me to seduce you?'" Again, totally straight faced.
It was at this point that her confused expression turned into uncomfortable shock.
So I’Äà repeated: "Would you like me to seduce you?"
I think I was amused by what effect the words of a song were having on my mom, so I continued on.
"Would you like me to seduce you?"
She was stunned, to where she couldn't continue to wash dishes, and lost her grip and a pan dropped to the floor and clanged around a bit. . . she was at a lack of words.
I had no idea why she was reacting weird, but it felt like the line was almost magical, like it had some kind of superhuman effect on my mom. I had never experienced a line of words having such an effect on anyone. . . so I said it again.
"Would you like me to seduce you?"
She now had this sick expression on her face. . . like. . .this is a very gross and uncomfortable situation, and then I felt really dirty and had no idea why. Ah, childhood memories!
Here's to you Anne Bancroft, Rest in Peace!
Just another day in the life of an Art Juggernaut.
