COJO ART IN FLUX
5-4-06 POST RATED: Aeon Flux, MTV, Cojo, Loop, Loopnyc, Peter Chung,

Aeon Flux, the MTV Liquid Television animated character created by animator Peter Chung, is #21 on my 50 greatest cartoon characters of all times. When MTV tried to cash in on their 10 year retired property by creating a live action film staring Charlize Theron I had my doubts. When I read an interview with Peter Chung basically divorcing himself from the film for having no creative control, I knew it would suck. If you have never seen Peter's work check out his animation demo reel. If you know his Aeon Flux work, you will be surprised to see some of the other work in that reel. Anyway, he's one of the few guys in this world making art who I really respect. (Peter, if you ever read this update, bounce me an e-mail)

Well, I rented the live action version from Blockbuster the other night and had it on while I sketched for SKETCH365.com. I was right, it was as far from the animated character as it could be. They really missed the mark. I would dissect all the ways this movie sucked but that's not the point of this update.

In the DVD extras there was a behind the scenes extra called something like "Creating The World Of Aeon Flux." I wanted to see if there would be any Peter Chung commentary in there, and there was. What flipped me out though was when the director of the film was giving Peter a tour of the Berlin set, his friend, or girlfriend was in frame, and to my surprise SHE WAS WEARING ONE OF THE LOOP BAGS I DESIGNED!!!

It's just weird to be drawing and see this bag I drew floating around in Berlin next to one of my favorite animators, and Charlize Theron a day after I wrote the LOOP UPDATE .

These bags just seem to keep popping up on the tube. Like my friend JUNO said:
"These Loop Bags are like your 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon!"

Just another day in the life of an Art Juggernaut.
