COJO MEETS ARTIST ROMERO BRITTO
4-5-06 POST RATED: Artist, Britto, Cojo, Art Expo
I met Romero Britto at the artexpo at the Javits Center a few weeks back. I promise I'll write about all the artexpo stuff in a few weeks when I can spare a second. Britto is cool though. For people who don't know shit about art, he is a big-time pop culture artist. He had a guest appearance on NBC's The Apprentice where he and pop artist Burton Morris both created designs that were silk screened on shirts- remember the bejeweling incident. Anyway, Britto's design won.
My boy Buga was Britto's assistant for a few years so I respect him. Burton Morris's work is God-awful. He couldn't eat shit off my shoe. Apologies to any Burton Morris fans, but really now. He popularized the clip-art-can-be-fine-art "coffee cup with swirls" FRIENDS central perk logo art, you know, with the 50's style comic book impact lines around the borders of the image, bah!
Looking at his work makes me almost embarrassed to be in the same field. How the fuck is this guy famous? There is retro, and then there is just shit. His work is just shit. If you have many thousands of dollars to spend on art, and you are gonna buy one of this dude's pieces, do yourself a favor and take the money and spend it on a whole slew of Sketch365.com drawings.
Just another day in the life of an Art Juggernaut.
