WANDA SYKES EXPLAINS MY ARTWORK
11-17-06 POST RATED: Maxim, Maxim Magazine, Maxim April 06, Maxim Issue 100, Across The USA, Back Page, A Day in the Life, Cojoart.com, Artsucks.com
Does Wanda Sykes read Maxim? When I make appearances on radio shows my friends say "Radio isn't a visual medium, art isn't funny. Talking about art is boring. What are you going to do, describe an illustration?"
Turns out my friends can fuck themselves, describing an illustration can be funny. Look at the art above. Do you think you could describe that art in a funny way and make it into a comedy bit? This art ran back in April 2006 on the back page of Maxim issue 100 (READ THE UPDATE ABOUT IT HERE). I just picked up Wanda Sykes' new DVD "Sick and Tired" which was a recording of her October 14th, 2006 HBO Comedy Special.
Well, just watch Wanda explain the drawing for yourself and see if you can do better. It's all in the delivery.
She might have found out about the story from some other source, who knows. It's not as clear cut as the time NBC's THE OFFICE titled and created an entire episode around a feature I did for Maxim UK and mentioned Maxim in the episode (READ- NBC'S THE OFFICE BITES COJO'S MAXIM UK FEATURE ).
My guess is she's a Maxim reader and was inspired by the artwork. Her comedy targets the magazine's core demographic, and she's been interviewed by STUFF MAGAZINE- Maxim's little brother so the notion that she might have stumbled on issue 100 (the collector cover which printed in the millions nationwide) 7 months before her performance, chuckled and made a bit out of it isn't too far fetched.
The bitch (or the beauty) about good editorial illustration is that as an artist you have to read a story that could take minute (or an hour) to explain in words and boil it down to a single drawing.
I love Wanda, more Curbed and Crank Yankers!
