Last month I wrote about my recent adventure with illustrating the book cover for Harper Collins' TO HATE LIKE THIS IS TO BE HAPPY FOREVER and having the art killed just before the final step (READ HERE). The author of the book Will Blythe, whom I've never met or spoken to before, must have read my update and decided to contact me with apologies and a clarification. Thanks Will, no hard feelings. Maybe we'll work together on a project again in the future. . .:
SUBJECT: Your To Hate Illustrations
Dear Artsucks,
I'm sorry that Harper Collins gave you the impression that I didn't think well of your art. You're good. And I admire your work and your site. In fact, as I recall (though my mind is probably addled from a very good head cold) , it was my idea to try and get a super-hero comic style cover. In the end, I was worried that we hadn't sufficiently distinguished the book from other sports books and that was why we went with the Matt Mahurin cover, based on an illustration that originally ran in Esquire.
It wasn't an easy decision for anyone. And who knows how the new cover will do? But I appreciate the work you did on my behalf.
