In honor of the local indy comic strip / comic book exhibit MoCCA Fest returning to NYC this week The Village Voice pulled out all the stops getting 30 cartoonists and line artists (Myself included) to illustrate the entire issue. It's a fully illustrated newspaper! With all normally photo headed articles replaced by cartoons, and featuring a brilliant comic mash-up cover by Ward Sutton. I have yet to get my hands on a copy of it (as it hits the red boxes today) but I can't wait to see how this piece looks on newsprint.
I have never had a piece in the actual original Village Voice, it's always been one of my milestones. I've done covers for other Village Voice papers in other cities but NY's own The Village Voice is the flagship, and the only one I actually read. . . Cojo pencils for the ROTC piece.
I haven't had a piece printed in a Village Voice media newspaper since 2007. Ever since this September I have really started gunning for the NY edition, and this ROTC piece was perfect for me.
For the background, and reference on how people enjoy the stairs I went up to Columbia's Campus on the first semi-warm day in March and took a bunch of photos.
Here is The Village Voice Slideshow for all of the artists who put together the issue. And here is the online version of the article: The Return of ROTC to Columbia.
There is a great article about the Ward Sutton cover in today's The Washington Post- read it which also mentions me.
