Being busy today and didn't plan on going to any art fairs till the weekend but my brother was buying some ski lift tickets off of a guy on craigslist and asked me if I could pick them up for him in Chelsea. I grabbed my press creds, picked up the tickets, and after the transaction I headed over to a few of the art fairs I knew were having "press and invite only" openings and went to town.
My perennial second favorite art fair because of it's DIY style layout and the profusion of Line art is Fountain New York 2011, (a close second only to Volta NY).
This is what it looks like from the street.
Street artist Clown Soldier was creating this piece when I arrived. I started to frame him in the shot when he told me "I don't want my picture taken, I'm a street artist." Apparently the world of street art is becoming a posse of mini secretive Banksy's.
Just past Clown was an Ellis G bike tracing which I always enjoy on streets and sidewalks, I guess he's making the leap to gallery walls.
Above is some line work by Lambert Fine Arts artists.
Minimalist line drawings and giant peeps by Ryan Cronin.
This crazy room instillation is always a highlight of fountain. This year it was put together by SuckerChump artist Greg Haberny.
Moving up from his wall last year in the Murder Lounge (the fountain's basement gallery) to the main room this year Greenpoint native artist Chris Smith from Subtexture's layout was impressive.
I am guessing this artist's name is "El Indio" but not sure.
Down in the Murder lounge.
Artist / Musician Rob Servo shows some of his new and old pieces.
Artist Brian Leo showing some work from his new show The Post Ironic at Christina Ray .
Some artwork from Clown Soldier and others at The Marketplace Gallery
The Marketplace Gallery Owner / Curator / Artist Sampson Contompasis
A secret door swings out to reveal Sampson's arsenal.
Art by Street Artist "Radical!"
My favorite DUMBO gallery Mighty Tanaka showing work by artist JMR
JMR poses in front of one of his finished pieces.
JMR live-painting a mural at Fountain New York 2011
As I left I noticed this greenhouse with an artist inside putting on the finishing touches.
I also got a look at this little dude with a big message.
Weren't these here last year?
