LOOKING FOR ART
IN TIMES SQUARE

As it was my girlfriend Molly's birthday I got her a ticket to see two of her favorite performers MANDY PATINKIN & PATTI LUPONE sing show tunes on Broadway. While Molly was taking in the heights of theatrical arts, I was wandering around one of my least favorite parts of the city, in search of anything in the visual art realms that wasn't overtly tourist driven.
Aside from the new years ball, the Broadway show posters, flashing ads, and the massive screens playing commercials on Loop ad infinitum, there were a few weird and somewhat out of place things I didn't expect to see on the great white way, such as the dead sea scrolls. . . WTF?
I walked over to Bryant Park to check out the ice skating, where I noticed a plein air painter documenting the action.
I didn't bother approaching him because this is obviously one attention starved artist whom doesn't deserve any extra publicity but must love having his picture taken while he paints.
"Desert Rooftops" a public art installation a few blocks over by David Brooks gives the illusion of a house submerged in the earth up to it's roof. The artist describes it as a "humorous commentary on global overdevelopment". It will remain on the corner of 8th Avenue and 46th Street until February 5th.
We left Times Square, and Molly gushed over the performances. We were cheating on the low carb life so Molly had some birthday sushi at SushiYawa, and we grabbed a few warm cookies at Insomnia Cookies for dessert.
Followed by shared drinks, fries, and Molly's Cupcakes with some of Molly's friends at Peculier Pub.
