After recently meeting the 24-year-old Ecuadorian American painter Raquel Echanique at Joseph Meloy's Vandal Expressionism opening at Salon d' Art earlier this month she invited me to come to the public unveiling of her new body of painted work "Shifting Matter" on display at Shade Bar in the West Village.
I had been sick in bed ever since I caught Nickeledge's cold at the imok show, and the fever had only recently broken. I was feeling a little better, and needed some fresh air. I figured a little inspiration couldn't hurt either, so I pulled my-clammy-self out of bed, slapped on some clothes, grabbed the L train and headed over to Sullivan Street.
The artist herself, Raquel Echanique.
Amazing oil and acrylic color portraits of disembodied heads. The mash-up of realism and abstraction is uniquely original.
I love this one, too bad my camera kind of sucks in dim light. Crazy good in person- these photos don't do the work justice.

Raquel and one of her models, fashion blogger Jillian Mercado.
The work will be on view for less than a month, so check it out while you can!
