Imagine if Andy Warhol had been keeping a diary during his early commercial
art years as a blog. Now when I say early, I'm talking before the soup
cans, the Marilyns, and the self-portraits and back when he was a
portfolio-wielding upstart in 1950s Manhattan, proving his mettle as a
young New York illustrator on the rise.
The steps he would have taken to devise his transition into fine art would
be fascinating, were they to be on record -- and what a teaching tool, both
to future artists and art historians. He would have documented his gallery
going and observations of the art world at the time, took notes,
hobnobbed, partied, and made countless pictures and recordings.
All these things he would have done in trying to figure the ins and outs
of the New York Contemporary art terrain of the day to serve his needs.
Subsequently, he would have left behind an online time capsule of what
essentially would be the "making of Andy Warhol."
Art Sucks is the present day form of this. Just swap out Cojo for Andy,
and you get the idea.
For ten years now Art Sucks has evolved from a newsletter I would send to my
illustration clients, friends, and family into a respectable press
authority.
My blog is a typographic articulation of my creativity, and I seem to
always be on the cutting edge of what's next in art. Trying to seek out
and find the newest, the most inspiring, is the "it" that drives me. Art
Sucks is a mouthpiece; art is my life. I write about art. That's what I
do. Art sucks, and that's how I make my voice heard.
